Periodic orbits in a simple ray-splitting system.

چکیده

We study ray dynamics in a square billiard that allows mode conversion and is parametrised by κ, the ratio of the velocities of the two modes. At κ → 1+, conversion occurs at every reflection and periodic orbits proliferate exponentially. As κ increases beyond √ 2, the collection of daughter rays explore only three momentum directions and mode conversion is progressively inhibited. We provide an algorithm for determining periodic orbits when κ > √ 2 and show numerically that exponential proliferation persists around κ ≃ √ 2 but as κ increases, a crossover to sub-exponential behaviour occurs for short periods. We discuss these results in the light of conservation laws. Periodic orbits in scattering from elastic voids

The scattering determinant for the scattering of waves from several obstacles is considered in the case of elastic solids with voids. The multi-scattering determinant displays contributions from periodic ray-splitting orbits. A discussion of the weights of such orbits is presented.

Comparing periodic-orbit theory to perturbation theory in the asymmetric infinite square well.

An infinite square well with a discontinuous step is one of the simplest systems to exhibit non-Newtonian ray-splitting periodic orbits. This system is analyzed using both time-independent perturbation theory (PT) and periodic-orbit theory and the approximate formulas for the energy eigenvalues derived from these two approaches are compared. The periodic orbits of the system can be divided into...

The Melnikov Method and Subharmonic Orbits in a Piecewise-Smooth System

In this work we consider a two-dimensional piecewise smooth system, defined in two domains separated by the switching manifold x = 0. We assume that there exists a piecewise-defined continuous Hamiltonian that is a first integral of the system. We also suppose that the system possesses an invisible fold-fold at the origin and two heteroclinic orbits connecting two hyperbolic critical points on ...

Point-to-periodic and Periodic-to-periodic Connections

In this work we consider computing and continuing connecting orbits in parameter dependent dynamical systems. We give details of algorithms for computing connections between equilibria and periodic orbits, and between periodic orbits. The theoretical foundation for these techniques is given by the seminal work of Beyn [5] where a numerical technique is also proposed. Our algorithms consist of s...

Gaussian-optical approach to stable periodic orbit resonances of partially chaotic dielectric micro-cavities.

The quasi-bound modes localized on stable periodic ray orbits of dielectric micro-cavities are constructed in the short-wavelength limit using the parabolic equation method. These modes are shown to coexist with irregularly spaced ???chaotic??? modes for the generic case. The wavevector quantization rule for the quasi-bound modes is derived and given a simple physical interpretation in terms of...
